Casiño seeks support for Congress probe on oil price disparities in Mindanao and Visayas

Friday, May 13, 2011

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño called on local governments, transport and business groups in Northern Mindanao to support efforts to push for a Congressional probe on oil price hikes and the disparity of oil prices in the provinces.

"I am bothered no end that average pump prices here in Northern Mindanao as of May 10 are at P60.25/liter for gasoline and P58.00/liter for diesel while average Metro Manila pump prices after 14 rounds of oil price hikes since January 2011 are at P56/liter for gasoline and P48.20/liter for diesel. That is a P4.25/liter difference for gasoline and P2/liter difference for diesel! This is not justifiable and government must be pushed to do action on this,” Casiño said.

Casiño is primary author of House Resolution 1170 that directs the House Committee on Energy to conduct an urgent inquiry on the unusually high prices of fuel products imposed by oil companies in cities and provinces outside of Metro Manila. He is also main author of House Bills 2719 (An Act to Exempt Oil and Oil Products from the VAT) and 4355 (Downstream Oil Industry Regulation Act).

“Aside from the investigation on the pricing scheme and other abusive practices of the oil companies, we are trying to move legislation with regard to removing the VAT on oil and regulating the oil industry. But nothing moves in Congress without the loud support from the public,” Casiño said.

“Bayan Muna party-list will work with the following transport organizations in the region to heighten public support for these measures: Solidarity of Transport Alliance in Region X - Piston (STAREX-PISTON), Federation of Taxi Operators and Drivers Association-Cagayan de Oro, Federation of Motorela Drivers and Operators Association-CDO, Gingoog City Transport Services Cooperative (GINCITU-TSCI), Coalition of Lanao del Norte Utility Transport for Change (CLUTCH), Multicab Operators and Drivers of Gingoog Association (MODGINA) and Misamis Oriental Jeepneys in Lugait, Initao, and Opol towns and even bus lines like Batman and Lucy who are either for scrapping the 12 percent value-added tax (VAT) on oil products or the repeal of the Oil Deregulation Law,” he said.

“The problematic state policies that permit oil price hikes and protect the oil companies instead of the public must be addressed by Congress with nationwide public pressure. We hope that these transport groups and peoples organizations like Bayan and the Kalumbay Regional Lumad Alliance can reach out to more local governments, business chambers and organizations to widen the campaign for the policy changes that will bring about the regulation of the oil industry, the reduction of oil prices nationwide and a stop to the pegging of higher pump prices in Cagayan de Oro and all other cities and provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao,” Casiño said.

The progressive solon, who also chairs the House Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Development said that “high oil prices definitely have a severe impact on micro-, small and medium enterprises and restrict growth and discourage investments.”

“We will not only address the calls of transport groups in Region 10 with regard to the disparities in pump prices that are much higher than those in Metro Manila. We will also encourage SME Councils and business chambers to support our campaign since lower oil prices will positively impact businesses with lower transportation costs and give consumers more money to spend for SME products,” Casiño said.

The Bayan Muna party-list solon also said that “widespread public pressure will behoove Congress to heed the demands of drivers and the working people and help put a stop to these price hikes since the P450 million Pantawid Pasada transport subsidy of the Palace has long been offset by oil price hikes even before the Aquino government even thought of it,” Casiño said.

Yeah, I also notice the difference of oil and gasoline prices in Mindanao and Visayas from Luzon. The government should do something about it. It's not fair to the people of the southern.

This is all about fares in Misamis Oriental. I like to ask what would be the exact fare when we took a ride on sa mga jeep. cuz wala sila tamang singil. iba2x yung singil nila. Can I ask some copy or summary of fare rates from municipality - municipality and from municipality to city vise- versa. Sory if I brought this matter cuz, its 2 weeks already na nag commute ako then, I observe na iba-iba talaga yung singil ng jeep particularly from opol - cdo and cdo to opol. Because most of the time were doing a cut trip. Like: Gaisano - Bulua how much is the fare for that cuz some they asked 10.00 & others only 7.00 & theres still 13.00... so, I was thingking hindi pareho yung singil nila. Thats why Im trying to extend this concern, and hoping there is somebody can help me to explain why? Cause Im trying to invite friends from other places and I cant gave them an exact fares from destination - destination when they are using a cut trip ging to our residence. Sana this can help me. And if ever can prvide a copy of the fare rates... I will just check at this site.

Thank you and God Bless.
