OZAMIZ CITY:THE Catholic-run Radio Station dxDD-AM “Ang Radyo Kampana” of the Archdiocese of Ozamiz has launched an appeal to help for the victims who fled their homes following the deadly massive flooding caused by the storm Ondoy as it swept across the country’s main island of Luzon.
The chief of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) earlier called for compassion in what Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said may be the worst flood in more than half a century.
Cashier of station dxDD AM/FM, Ozamiz City, Sr. Aida S. Bano SJW said aid in cash and in kind continue to pour in to help augment their relief operation for the victims of the killer disaster.
Fr. Edgar Canama, station manager said Church has launched an appeal through Station dxDD Operation Tabang Program for food, medicine and clothing for emergency relief.
The gathered donations for both financial and material help of dxDD Operation Tabang Program will be send to Church charities led by the CBCP’s National Secretarial for Social Action (NASSA).
Initial reports from Nassa’s social action networks revealed evacuees have reached to 23,147 families or 115,990 persons, located in 205 evacuation centers.
The figures, however, are expected to rise as search and rescue operations are continuously being conducted.
The storm hit the island on Saturday, September 26, taking over 200 lives and causing over P2 billion in property damage. It triggered landslides and widespread flooding that trapped thousands of people on rooftops for days.
Survivors of Typhoon Ondoy are angry at the lack of aid. Some of them reported that they were trapped inside their homes or on the rooftops but were ignored by rescue helicopters flying overhead.
Countless people were dismayed by the government’s failure to come to their aid at the height of the massive floods that swept Metro Manila and nearby provinces at the weekend.
In connection to this, Romerico N. Gregorio, head of dXDD Operation Tabang Program said “our Catholic-run radio station is accepting donations for both financial and material help.”
He said the appeal of the dxDD Operation Tabang for help following a killer flood continues to bring responses from individuals who immediately responded to help the thousands of typhoon victims.
The donation will be used in providing the victims with immediate food aid and potable water in the aftermath of the storm that left various areas in Metro Manila and nearby provinces under water.
Aside from the dxDD Operation Tabang, the Archdiocesan Social Action has likewise initiated a campaign to gather assistance for the deadly disaster.
